πŸ“Œ Overview

JEE Advanced is the second-stage engineering entrance examination for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and a few other institutes that use Advanced ranks. It is organised each year by one of the IITs on behalf of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

For 2026 the organising institute is IIT Roorkee. The examination is held on a single day with two compulsory papers of 3 hours each. In 2026 the date was Sunday, 17 May 2026 (Paper 1: 09:00–12:00 IST, Paper 2: 14:30–17:30 IST).

Only candidates who satisfy every eligibility criterion – including a place among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 – may register. Appearance in both papers is compulsory. The paper design (question types and marking) changes in detail every year and is revealed in the official brochure and on exam day.

πŸ“‹ Eligibility (must satisfy ALL criteria)

The five criteria published by JAB must be met together. Summary of the usual framework (confirm the year’s brochure):

  • Criterion A1 – JEE Main performance: Among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in B.E./B.Tech Paper 1 of JEE Main, distributed across OPEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD sub-quotas as notified.
  • Criterion A2 – Age: Born on or after 1 October 2001 for the 2026 cycle (five-year relaxation for SC / ST / PwD).
  • Criterion A3 – Number of attempts: A candidate may attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.
  • Criterion A4 – Class 12 year: Appeared for Class 12 (or equivalent) for the first time in the previous year or the current year (with specified exceptions for earlier appearance in certain boards – read the brochure).
  • Criterion A5 – Earlier IIT admission: Candidates who have already accepted an IIT seat (with listed exceptions such as preparatory course) are generally ineligible.

Additionally, for admission to IITs, candidates must satisfy the 75% marks in Class 12 (65% for SC / ST / PwD) or be in the top 20 percentile of their board, as implemented by JoSAA in that year.

Foreign national / OCI / PIO candidates follow a separate registration path described on the official site.

πŸ“ Exam Pattern

Both papers contain questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Question formats typically include:

  • Single correct MCQ
  • Multiple correct MCQ (one or more options)
  • Numerical Answer Type (integer or decimal)
  • Paragraph / comprehension based questions
  • Match-the-following / matrix match

Marking may include full marks, partial marks, zero and negative marks depending on the question type. The exact scheme is printed on the question paper and in the β€œInstructions to Candidates”. Total marks are not fixed across years; ranks are based on aggregate of both papers after applying the year’s marking rules.

The examination is in English and Hindi. Candidates choose the language while registering.

πŸ“š Syllabus

JEE Advanced syllabus is published as a separate PDF on jeeadv.ac.in. It overlaps heavily with JEE Main but goes deeper on several Class 11–12 topics and expects multi-concept problems. Topics span the full PCM school curriculum with additional emphasis on:

  • Physics: mechanics including rigid body, waves, thermodynamics, electrostatics, magnetism, optics, modern physics – with experimental reasoning
  • Chemistry: physical chemistry numericals, inorganic trends and bonding, organic mechanisms and named reactions as listed
  • Mathematics: algebra, trigonometry, analytical geometry, differential & integral calculus, vectors, probability – with proof-style and multi-step problems

Do not assume Main syllabus equals Advanced syllabus. Download the official Advanced syllabus and mark extra sub-topics.

πŸ“… Important Dates (2026)

  • JEE Main 2026 sessions: January and April
  • Registration for JEE Advanced (Indian nationals who qualified Main): 23 April – 2 May 2026 (typical window published by JAB)
  • Foreign / OCI (F) direct registration: early April to 2 May 2026
  • Fee payment deadline: 4 May 2026
  • Admit card: from 11 May 2026
  • Examination: 17 May 2026
  • Response sheet, provisional answer keys and feedback window: late May
  • Result: early June (as per brochure)
  • JoSAA counselling: after result

πŸ’» Application

Qualified candidates log in with JEE Main credentials on jeeadv.ac.in, fill choices (language, scribe if eligible, exam city), pay the fee and download the admit card. There is no β€œwalk-in”. Missing the short registration window means waiting another year (if still eligible).

πŸ† Result & Admission

A common rank list (CRL) and category rank lists are prepared for candidates who cross the minimum percentage in each subject and in aggregate (the β€œminimum prescribed marks” / cut-off criteria). Tie-break rules are defined in the brochure.

Seats in IITs, IISc (where applicable through JoSAA), and other participating institutes are allotted by JoSAA based on rank, category, nationality and filled choices. Architects may also need AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) if they want B.Arch at IIT Kharagpur / IIT Roorkee.

πŸ’‘ Preparation Tips

  • First master JEE Main-level speed, then move to multi-concept Advanced problems.
  • Solve official JEE Advanced papers of at least the last 10–15 years in timed two-paper format.
  • Practise multiple-correct and partial-marking questions; random guessing is costly.
  • Maintain an error notebook of conceptual gaps, not just wrong answers.
  • Physical and mental stamina for two 3-hour papers on the same day is part of preparation – simulate the full day.
  • Do not ignore Chemistry; it is often the rank-decider when Physics and Maths papers are unusually hard.
  • Read every instruction on the computer screen; marking schemes differ by paragraph.

❓ FAQs

  • Can I attempt Advanced without Main? No, except specified foreign-national routes.
  • Is Paper 2 optional? No. Both papers are compulsory.
  • How many times can I attempt? Two times in two consecutive years, subject to other criteria.
  • Does a high Main rank guarantee IIT? No. Advanced rank and JoSAA choices decide IIT admission.

πŸ—‚οΈ How to build your personal syllabus sheet

  1. Download the official syllabus / information handout PDF tonight.
  2. Copy every heading into a notebook page or spreadsheet.
  3. Against each heading write: Book chapter / NCERT unit / YouTube playlist name / last PYQ year you solved.
  4. Mark High / Medium / Low after you solve 3 years of PYQs β€” not before.
  5. Revise High topics four times, Medium twice, Low once, all with PYQs.

Current affairs β€” one method for every exam on this site

  • Read (do not only watch): one newspaper or PIB daily digest.
  • Make 5–10 lines per important scheme, report, judgment, RBI decision or science mission.
  • Revise a 30-day file every Sunday and a 6-month file before Prelims / Mains.
  • Link every CA note to a static syllabus heading (polity, economy, environment, banking, defence).

PYQ rule

  • If a topic has not appeared in 8–10 years and is tiny in the official syllabus, keep it low priority.
  • If a topic appears every year (polity articles, percentage, RC, banking rates, NCERT biology lines), it is High regardless of coaching β€œnew pattern” videos.

πŸ“Š Exam Trend & Highest-Weightage Areas

Commissions do not publish an official chapter-wise weightage table. The points below come from public previous-year papers and widely used coaching analyses. Use them to decide revision order, not to skip a listed syllabus topic.

JEE Advanced β€” how the paper behaves

  • No fixed chapter weightage. Multi-concept questions mix mechanics with calculus-style reasoning.
  • Multiple-correct and partial marking punish guessing.
  • Chemistry often decides rank when Physics/Maths papers are unusually hard.
  • Must-do: last 15 years official papers in two-paper same-day format.

πŸ“š What Content You Should Actually Follow

  1. Official syllabus PDF of the current year β€” print it and tick topics.
  2. Official previous year papers (last 8–10 years) from the commission / NTA / IBPS / SSC website.
  3. One primary book per subject (listed below). Do not collect 10 PDFs of the same chapter.
  4. NCERT Class 6–12 where the exam is GS / science / maths based β€” free on ncert.nic.in.
  5. Current affairs only from a newspaper + one monthly compilation + the official PIB / ministry sites.
  6. Mocks that copy the live interface (sectional timer, NAT, descriptive box).

⚠️ How to treat coaching names on this page

Book names and YouTube teachers are listed because lakhs of students already use them in public. This site does not sell their courses and does not guarantee a rank if you watch them. Always cross-check facts with the official syllabus and previous papers. If a video contradicts the official notification, trust the notification.
