📌 Overview

JEE Main is the national computer-based entrance test for B.E. / B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning programmes at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) and many state / private colleges that accept the JEE Main rank.

It is also the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced, which is required for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top 2,50,000 candidates in B.E./B.Tech Paper 1 (across categories, as per the official distribution) become eligible to register for JEE Advanced.

NTA conducts JEE Main in two sessions each year so that candidates can improve their score. The better NTA score of the two sessions is used for the final All India Rank. For 2026, Session 1 was held in January (21–30 January) and Session 2 in April (2–9 April).

📋 Eligibility

  • Qualifying exam: Passed or appearing in Class 12 / equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational subject (as per current bulletin for B.Tech).
  • Year of passing: Typically the current year or the previous two years (confirm the exact window in the year’s Information Bulletin).
  • Age: No upper age limit for JEE Main itself. Institutes may have their own age rules.
  • Attempts: Candidates may appear in both sessions of a year. There is no lifetime attempt cap for JEE Main.
  • For JEE Advanced: Additional criteria apply (top 2.5 lakh in Paper 1, age, number of attempts at Advanced, Class 12 year, 75% / top-20 percentile rule for IIT admission – see JEE Advanced page and JoSAA rules).

State code of eligibility is generally the state from which the candidate passed Class 12, not the native state. This matters for Home State quota in NITs.

📝 Exam Pattern

Paper 1 – B.E. / B.Tech (most common)

  • Physics: 20 MCQs + 5 compulsory numerical value questions = 25 Q, 100 marks
  • Chemistry: 20 MCQs + 5 numericals = 25 Q, 100 marks
  • Mathematics: 20 MCQs + 5 numericals = 25 Q, 100 marks
  • Total: 75 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours

Important recent change: all 5 numerical questions in each subject are compulsory (no “attempt any 5 of 10”). Negative marking of −1 applies to incorrect numerical answers as well as MCQs. +4 for a correct answer.

Paper 2A – B.Arch

  • Mathematics (CBT), Aptitude (CBT) and Drawing (pen-and-paper)
  • Total 77 questions, 400 marks (confirm exact split in the latest bulletin)

Paper 2B – B.Planning

  • Mathematics, Aptitude and Planning-based questions – fully CBT
  • 100 questions, 400 marks (confirm latest bulletin)

The paper is offered in English, Hindi and other languages listed by NTA. Medium chosen in the form is used in the test.

📅 Important Dates (2026 – typical)

  • Session 1 exam: 21–30 January 2026
  • Session 2 exam: 2–9 April 2026
  • Application windows open a few weeks before each session
  • City intimation and admit cards released close to the exam
  • Answer key challenge window after each session
  • Session-wise NTA scores, then final combined rank
  • JoSAA / CSAB counselling after JEE Advanced result

🏆 Ranking, Normalisation & Counselling

Because the exam runs in multiple shifts, NTA uses a normalisation procedure to compute NTA scores. The best NTA score across sessions is taken. All India Rank and Category Rank are published for Paper 1 / 2A / 2B separately.

Seat allocation for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs is done through JoSAA (josaa.nic.in) jointly with IIT seats, followed by CSAB special rounds for leftover NIT+ seats. State counselling bodies may also use JEE Main rank.

💡 Preparation Tips

  • Treat NCERT as compulsory for Chemistry and as the base for Physics theory.
  • Build problem-solving speed with timed chapter tests. JEE Main rewards accuracy plus pace.
  • Because numericals are compulsory and carry negative marks, practise integer / decimal answers without a calculator.
  • Use the January session as a real exam, then close gaps before April.
  • Analyse every mock: weak chapters, silly errors, and time spent per subject.
  • Keep Class 12 board preparation aligned; many institutes still look at board marks / top-20 percentile for Advanced eligibility.
  • Do official NTA mock tests on the practice portal to get used to the interface.

❓ FAQs

  • Is JEE Main enough for IITs? No. IITs require JEE Advanced after qualifying through JEE Main Paper 1.
  • Can I appear in only one session? Yes. Two sessions are an opportunity, not a requirement.
  • Does the drawing paper happen on computer? No. B.Arch drawing is pen-and-paper.
  • Are both sessions compulsory for rank? No. Best score is used.

🗂️ JEE Main chapter focus list

  • Maths: Sets & functions, complex numbers, quadratic, sequence & series, permutation-combination, binomial, matrices, trig, straight line, circle, conic, 3D, limits-continuity-differentiability, applications of derivatives, integrals, DE, vector, statistics, probability
  • Physics: Units, kinematics, NLM, WEP, rotation, gravitation, solids/fluids, thermal physics, oscillations & waves, electrostatics, current, magnetism, EMI-AC, EM waves, optics, modern physics, semiconductors, experimental skills
  • Chemistry: Full physical + inorganic NCERT + organic GOC to biomolecules / polymers as in NTA syllabus PDF

Print the official NTA JEE Main syllabus and tick. Small deletions/additions happen — the PDF wins over any coaching list.

🗂️ How to build your personal syllabus sheet

  1. Download the official syllabus / information handout PDF tonight.
  2. Copy every heading into a notebook page or spreadsheet.
  3. Against each heading write: Book chapter / NCERT unit / YouTube playlist name / last PYQ year you solved.
  4. Mark High / Medium / Low after you solve 3 years of PYQs — not before.
  5. Revise High topics four times, Medium twice, Low once, all with PYQs.

Current affairs — one method for every exam on this site

  • Read (do not only watch): one newspaper or PIB daily digest.
  • Make 5–10 lines per important scheme, report, judgment, RBI decision or science mission.
  • Revise a 30-day file every Sunday and a 6-month file before Prelims / Mains.
  • Link every CA note to a static syllabus heading (polity, economy, environment, banking, defence).

PYQ rule

  • If a topic has not appeared in 8–10 years and is tiny in the official syllabus, keep it low priority.
  • If a topic appears every year (polity articles, percentage, RC, banking rates, NCERT biology lines), it is High regardless of coaching “new pattern” videos.

📊 Exam Trend & Highest-Weightage Areas

Commissions do not publish an official chapter-wise weightage table. The points below come from public previous-year papers and widely used coaching analyses. Use them to decide revision order, not to skip a listed syllabus topic.

JEE Main — subject & chapter trends

  • Equal 100 marks each for Physics, Chemistry, Maths. Chemistry (especially NCERT inorganic + physical numericals) is the safest scoring block.
  • Maths: Calculus + Coordinate geometry + Algebra (quadratic, sequence, matrices, probability) dominate.
  • Physics: Mechanics, Electrostatics & current electricity, Modern physics, Optics, Magnetism.
  • All 5 numericals per subject are compulsory and carry −1. Accuracy > blind attempting.
  • Two sessions: treat January as a real exam; April as improvement.

📚 What Content You Should Actually Follow

  1. Official syllabus PDF of the current year — print it and tick topics.
  2. Official previous year papers (last 8–10 years) from the commission / NTA / IBPS / SSC website.
  3. One primary book per subject (listed below). Do not collect 10 PDFs of the same chapter.
  4. NCERT Class 6–12 where the exam is GS / science / maths based — free on ncert.nic.in.
  5. Current affairs only from a newspaper + one monthly compilation + the official PIB / ministry sites.
  6. Mocks that copy the live interface (sectional timer, NAT, descriptive box).
