πŸ“Œ Overview

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is India’s most prestigious recruitment exam. It selects officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and more than 20 other Group A and Group B central services.

The examination is conducted once every year in three successive stages: Preliminary Examination (objective screening), Main Examination (written descriptive papers) and Personality Test (interview). Marks of Prelims are not added to the final rank. Final merit is prepared out of 2025 marks (1750 from Mains + 275 from Interview).

For CSE 2026, UPSC notified 933 vacancies. Prelims was held on 24 May 2026. Mains commenced on 21 August 2026. Personality Test is expected in early 2027. Always treat the official notification and Information Brochure on upsc.gov.in as the only authentic source.

πŸ“ Exam Pattern

Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination (Screening)

Two compulsory objective papers of 200 marks each, 2 hours each, offline OMR. Negative marking: 1/3rd of the marks assigned to a question.

  • General Studies Paper I (200 marks): Current events, History of India & Indian National Movement, Indian & World Geography, Indian Polity & Governance, Economic & Social Development, Environment & Ecology, General Science. This paper decides the Prelims cut-off.
  • CSAT – General Studies Paper II (200 marks): Comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, decision making, basic numeracy (Class X level), data interpretation. Qualifying only – 33% (66.67 marks) required. Marks not counted for ranking.

Prelims is only a filter. Typically 12–15 times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for Mains.

Stage 2 – Main Examination (Written)

Nine conventional (descriptive) papers. Two language papers are qualifying (25% minimum). Seven papers of 250 marks each are counted for merit (1750 marks).

  • Paper A – Indian Language (300 marks, qualifying): One language from the Eighth Schedule. Candidates from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim are exempted.
  • Paper B – English (300 marks, qualifying)
  • Paper I – Essay (250 marks)
  • Paper II – General Studies I (250): Indian Heritage & Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society
  • Paper III – General Studies II (250): Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations
  • Paper IV – General Studies III (250): Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management
  • Paper V – General Studies IV (250): Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude
  • Paper VI & VII – Optional Subject Paper I & II (250 + 250)

Each paper is 3 hours. Candidates choose one optional from the official list (Literature, Humanities, Science, Engineering, Medical, Commerce, etc.).

Stage 3 – Personality Test / Interview (275 marks)

A board of UPSC members assesses mental calibre, social traits, interest in current affairs, critical powers of assimilation, balance of judgement, ability for social cohesion, leadership and intellectual and moral integrity. There is no minimum qualifying mark, but performance can change rank by hundreds of places.

πŸ’‘ Preparation Tips

  • Build a single, trusted book list. NCERTs (Class 6–12) plus one standard text per GS area (Laxmikanth for Polity, Spectrum for Modern History, GC Leong / NCERT for Geography, Ramesh Singh or similar for Economy, Shankar for Environment) is a common core.
  • Read one national newspaper daily and maintain concise current-affairs notes mapped to the syllabus, not to the news cycle.
  • CSAT is qualifying but has eliminated many serious candidates. Practise comprehension, basic maths and reasoning every week from the start.
  • For Mains, answer-writing practice is non-negotiable. Write timed answers, get them evaluated, and build introductions, body structure, diagrams and conclusions.
  • Choose an optional you can sustain for 8–10 months. Overlap with GS (Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography, Public Administration) saves time but is not mandatory.
  • Ethics requires both theory and a bank of personal / administrative examples. Practise case studies weekly.
  • Take full-length mock Prelims under exam conditions. Analyse mistakes by topic, not just by score.
  • Keep physical and mental health in the plan: sleep, exercise and short breaks prevent burnout in a 12–18 month cycle.
  • After Prelims, shift immediately to Mains answer writing. After Mains, prepare a Detailed Application Form (DAF) based interview strategy.

πŸ“– Suggested Starter Resources (non-official)

  • NCERT textbooks: History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science (selectively)
  • Indian Polity – M. Laxmikanth
  • A Brief History of Modern India – Spectrum
  • Certificate Physical and Human Geography – G.C. Leong
  • Economic Survey and Union Budget (summary + selected chapters)
  • 2nd ARC reports (selected), NITI Aayog strategy documents (selectively)
  • Previous 10 years of UPSC Prelims and Mains papers (official PDFs)

Coaching is optional. Many toppers are self-taught. What matters is consistency, revision and testing.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can final-year students apply? Yes, for the written stages. Degree proof is needed before the interview.
  • Is there a limit on optionals? One optional subject (two papers) from the official list.
  • Does Prelims score count in the final rank? No.
  • Can I write Mains in a regional language? Yes, except the qualifying English paper. Medium must be chosen carefully and used consistently.

πŸ—‚οΈ How to build your personal syllabus sheet

  1. Download the official syllabus / information handout PDF tonight.
  2. Copy every heading into a notebook page or spreadsheet.
  3. Against each heading write: Book chapter / NCERT unit / YouTube playlist name / last PYQ year you solved.
  4. Mark High / Medium / Low after you solve 3 years of PYQs β€” not before.
  5. Revise High topics four times, Medium twice, Low once, all with PYQs.

Current affairs β€” one method for every exam on this site

  • Read (do not only watch): one newspaper or PIB daily digest.
  • Make 5–10 lines per important scheme, report, judgment, RBI decision or science mission.
  • Revise a 30-day file every Sunday and a 6-month file before Prelims / Mains.
  • Link every CA note to a static syllabus heading (polity, economy, environment, banking, defence).

PYQ rule

  • If a topic has not appeared in 8–10 years and is tiny in the official syllabus, keep it low priority.
  • If a topic appears every year (polity articles, percentage, RC, banking rates, NCERT biology lines), it is High regardless of coaching β€œnew pattern” videos.

πŸ“Š Exam Trend & Highest-Weightage Areas

Commissions do not publish an official chapter-wise weightage table. The points below come from public previous-year papers and widely used coaching analyses. Use them to decide revision order, not to skip a listed syllabus topic.

UPSC CSE β€” what actually carries rank

  • Prelims GS I: Polity + Economy + Environment + Modern History + Current-linked static usually decide the cut-off. Art & culture and ancient/medieval are smaller but non-zero.
  • CSAT: Qualifying 33%. Comprehension + basic numeracy have eliminated many GS-strong candidates. Practise weekly.
  • Mains merit (1750): GS 1000 + Optional 500 + Essay 250. Interview 275 is added later.
  • Highest ROI writing: GS II (polity/governance) and GS III (economy/agri/internal security) plus a well-prepared optional.
  • Trend: more application and current-linked questions; fewer one-line fact questions in Prelims than a decade ago.

Detailed syllabus map (tick from the official notification appendix)

  • Prelims GS: current events; History of India & national movement; Indian & world geography; Polity & governance; economic & social development; environment & ecology; general science.
  • Mains GS I–IV as printed in the Rules β€” culture, world history, society, constitution, IR, economy, agri, S&T, environment, security, ethics case studies.
  • Optional: two papers of one subject from the official list.

πŸ“š What Content You Should Actually Follow

  1. Official syllabus PDF of the current year β€” print it and tick topics.
  2. Official previous year papers (last 8–10 years) from the commission / NTA / IBPS / SSC website.
  3. One primary book per subject (listed below). Do not collect 10 PDFs of the same chapter.
  4. NCERT Class 6–12 where the exam is GS / science / maths based β€” free on ncert.nic.in.
  5. Current affairs only from a newspaper + one monthly compilation + the official PIB / ministry sites.
  6. Mocks that copy the live interface (sectional timer, NAT, descriptive box).
