πŸ“Œ Overview

UGC NET is the national eligibility test for the post of Assistant Professor and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) / PhD admission as per current UGC and NTA rules. NTA conducts the exam in Computer Based Test mode, usually twice a year, in dozens of subjects.

Official portals: ugcnet.nta.nic.in and nta.ac.in.

NTA (on behalf of UGC)
Computer Based Test
Paper 1 (general) + Paper 2 (subject)
3 hours (no break)
Paper 1: 100 Q / 200 Β· Paper 2: 100 Q / 200
None (standard NET scheme)

πŸ“‹ Eligibility

  • Assistant Professor / NET: Master’s degree with at least 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender as notified) from a recognised university.
  • JRF: Same educational minimum plus the age cap notified for JRF (commonly 30 years with category relaxation). There is usually no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility alone.
  • Final-year postgraduate students may apply provisionally as per the Information Bulletin.
  • PhD holders may receive the 5% marks relaxation as per UGC rules in force.

πŸ“ Exam Pattern

The official description used by NTA in recent cycles is:

  • Paper 1: 50 questions, 100 marks (2 marks each) β€” compulsory for all subjects
  • Paper 2: 100 questions, 200 marks β€” subject chosen by the candidate
  • Total 150 questions, 300 marks, 180 minutes, no negative marking

If the live bulletin shows a different count, follow the bulletin. Qualifying cut-offs are percentile / percentage based and published with the result. JRF is awarded to a smaller top slice than NET-Assistant Professor.

πŸ“š Paper 1 Units

  • Research Aptitude
  • Comprehension
  • Communication
  • Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude

πŸ’‘ Preparation Tips

  • Paper 1 is common and scoring. Practise previous NET Paper 1 sets every week.
  • Paper 2 needs postgraduate-level command plus previous NET PYQs of that subject.
  • There is no negative marking β€” attempt all questions, but do not random-guess entire units you have not revised.
  • Keep UGC regulations on PhD / Assistant Professor shortlisting in mind; NET is necessary but colleges still interview.

πŸ—‚οΈ How to build your personal syllabus sheet

  1. Download the official syllabus / information handout PDF tonight.
  2. Copy every heading into a notebook page or spreadsheet.
  3. Against each heading write: Book chapter / NCERT unit / YouTube playlist name / last PYQ year you solved.
  4. Mark High / Medium / Low after you solve 3 years of PYQs β€” not before.
  5. Revise High topics four times, Medium twice, Low once, all with PYQs.

Current affairs β€” one method for every exam on this site

  • Read (do not only watch): one newspaper or PIB daily digest.
  • Make 5–10 lines per important scheme, report, judgment, RBI decision or science mission.
  • Revise a 30-day file every Sunday and a 6-month file before Prelims / Mains.
  • Link every CA note to a static syllabus heading (polity, economy, environment, banking, defence).

PYQ rule

  • If a topic has not appeared in 8–10 years and is tiny in the official syllabus, keep it low priority.
  • If a topic appears every year (polity articles, percentage, RC, banking rates, NCERT biology lines), it is High regardless of coaching β€œnew pattern” videos.

πŸ“Š Exam Trend & Highest-Weightage Areas

Commissions do not publish an official chapter-wise weightage table. The points below come from public previous-year papers and widely used coaching analyses. Use them to decide revision order, not to skip a listed syllabus topic.

UGC NET trends

  • Paper 1 (50 Q / 100) is common and very scoring if you finish the 10 units.
  • Paper 2 is PG-level of your subject. PYQs of that subject are the real syllabus.
  • No negative marking β€” but JRF cut-off sits well above NET cut-off.

πŸ“š What Content You Should Actually Follow

  1. Official syllabus PDF of the current year β€” print it and tick topics.
  2. Official previous year papers (last 8–10 years) from the commission / NTA / IBPS / SSC website.
  3. One primary book per subject (listed below). Do not collect 10 PDFs of the same chapter.
  4. NCERT Class 6–12 where the exam is GS / science / maths based β€” free on ncert.nic.in.
  5. Current affairs only from a newspaper + one monthly compilation + the official PIB / ministry sites.
  6. Mocks that copy the live interface (sectional timer, NAT, descriptive box).

🌐 Official & Open / Free Content (use these first)

Prefer a government PDF over a random Telegram file. Fake β€œmemory-based papers” with wrong keys waste months.

⚠️ How to treat coaching names on this page

Book names and YouTube teachers are listed because lakhs of students already use them in public. This site does not sell their courses and does not guarantee a rank if you watch them. Always cross-check facts with the official syllabus and previous papers. If a video contradicts the official notification, trust the notification.

⚠️ Disclaimer

Subject list, age for JRF and exact question counts are defined only in the NTA Information Bulletin of that session.
